"In the early years of the War, Asmodeus was a silent, secretive force of of opposition against us, sowing evil and destruction where'er she went. You must understand that she--it--is original sin incarnate. Asmodeus was the sin with which the serpent, her puppet and construct Satan, tempted Adam and Eve; before that she was the succubus Lilith who tried to seduce Adam away from paradise, before that, she was the darkness that formed when God spake, 'Let there be light'. Ever since the moment of its creation that darkness has sought to sow sin, discord and evil throughout the world, and many times she has nearly succeeded.

"For the most part, she sat hidden on her ancient throne in the darkness while Satan ruled Hell; unbeknownst to most others and certainly unrealized by him, she controlled his every move, a volatile, ancient, malignant presence in the background, pulling all the strings. Everything was part of her plan, and she let it all come to pass without blinking an eye; when Lucifer fell from Heaven of his own fault and pride and usurped Satan, she let it happen. She even let Lucifer seduce her and take her as his fiendish bride, never realizing her true signifigance, not knowing her to be the voice in the shadows. She let it be without comment. But when the Eridanus came to Earth for the first time, and their light began to put faith and love back in humanity, and light and hope, and the Deara rose to counter and destroy their light, and to protect ourselves we took sentience and corporeal forms among the elements; still she sat by, and watched. It would all play out eventually, she was confident of that.

"But then we came; 6 shining lights from afar, the most hallowed warriors of Heaven come to physical being to battle the demons and save Earth. We brought with us the power that the Deara feared and began to wipe them out, slowly, methodically, determined to win. Then, and only then, did Asmodeus fly from Hell to do battle.

"Behind her she brought all the demons, as it says the fourth and final horseman will in Revelations; to Satan she gave the seeds of wrath, war and destruction, to sow as he would. To Lucifer she gave pride, power and conquest; to Be'alzevub she gave famine and gluttony, plague and illness, and to the other Deara, the Great Ones who commanded her army--Mammon, Leviathan and Belphegor--she gave greed, envy and apathy, to destroy and conquer. And to herself; the final Death.

"Then Lucifer defected as the Deara's leader and disappeared, leaving a power vacuum quickly filled by greedy Mammon, and just as before, Asmodeus did nothing, did not stake her claim. Fortunately, the Deara fell apart under Mammon's leadership. In an effort to continue their victorious streak, Amon was created to fill the widening gap, and Satan intended her to be his bride; however, she overlooked him for Mammon, thus splitting the Deara's loyalties down the center. While Leviathan and Beezlebub continued on with the battle, and Mammon and Satan fell to fighting amongst themselves, Asmodeus hung back, silent and watchful, beginning to lose interest more and more in the proceedings. This was not her fight as much as she had thought; she had grown tired of it now, especially without her mate to fight alongside her. The discontent among the Greater Deara allowed us more victories; soon we were able to bring the fighting from Earth to our own home world, a sister world created in Earth's image, in the hopes of protecting humans. But then, keeping it contained in our realm, we could not protect humans from the sin left inside them, and many Deara took advantage of that. When the Son gave Himself for our sin, it dealt a hideous, crippling blow to Asmodeus, more than any of the other Deara. We took that opportunity to shatter them. Lucifer had abandoned them to pursue his own end, Mammon and Amon feared Senra's wrath more than anything else now that they had murdered her life-mate so cruelly, and Asmodeus was understandably less willing to continue battling. She had only ever been passive before, watching from the shadows, rarely taking part. This was not her war at all at that point.

"By the time of the Crucifixion, Asmodeus was losing ground rapidly. Thus we were able to effectively end the war, though at a terrible cost to us, and imprison her and the other demons in Hell, where they have been ever since. Of the Elder Deara, we stripped them of their powers as best we could and trapped them each within a circle of the fiery pit. Asmodeus now has nothing to do with Lucifer, and keeps to herself. She may very well help us, now that she is alone, betrayed and friendless."

"Why should she? You were the ones who trapped her. Why would she forgive you?"

"Why should we forgive her? Why should we risk everything on the off chance that she might not stab us in the back the minute she is set free? You are too young to understand how the War was. In many ways, it was the apocalypse. The earth was ravaged. The skies burned with blood day in and day out, the air was full of ash, and humans lived in a painful, terrible darkness more horrific and miserable than the darkness that had existed for them before the Eridanus, before we cleared the clouds to show them the sun. Animals, humans, and the spirits who traversed earth were dying by the millions every minute. You are attuned to death; if you stood upon that battlefield for even one second, the weight of the souls departing this existence would crush your very bones. You would go mad. No, you cannot understand it, no matter how horrible my description is; you have never seen anything like it, and I pray you never will. There were all kinds of species then that are gone now, that we saw, and we inevitably destroyed. There was death everywhere, to the point that God sent a flood for 40 days and 40 nights that covered the earth from pole to pole, to quench the fires and save what could be saved. It was then that the frontline of the battle, the horizon where Heaven and Hell met and we were containing the war, opened like a vast wound in the earth and swallowed all of Hell, both our armies, and many of our people. In a last act of sacrifice, many of us threw ourselves into the pit to make sure the Deara did not climb back up, and Senra closed the waters of the world high over the chasm, sealing them all in a watery grave. It cost hundreds of millions their lives, but they gave them willingly; after that, the Deara stood little chance."

"I still don't see why this would make her willing to aid us."

"Because Asmodeus alone remained flying as the waters closed over her brethren. Because Asmodeus alone lay down her spear and surrendered. She was never an active fighter, and never had she wanted a war of this magnitude. She herself was horribly depleted. When Senra refused her surrender and gave chase, Asmodeus disappeared. We did not see her again until the Deara began to once again rise, and finally, after the Crucifxion and our final victory, we did not see her at all.

"You see, Grievous, Asmodeus escaped imprisonment but remained wary of using her powers in case Senra sensed her, but she remained with Lucifer and their daughters. And then Lucifer banished her from hell to another astral plane, calling her a traitor, and six of her daughters refused to acknowledge her as their mother. The Eridanus immediately noticed and Asmodeus hid among the lesser demon, weak and friendless, adopting the name Sydonay to avoid detection. Do you understand now, why she might fight for us? Because she was betrayed. By her own mate. Because she was humiliated and turned out not by us, but by Lucifer, her so-called mate.
Because Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned...
...and a woman scorned hath no fury like the Queen of Hell."

A fun little blurb about some of Asmodeus's backstory. (Pronounced Az-muh-DEE-is by the way, not as-MOE-dee-us) Obviously there's still a lot I need to work out, it's not done by any means, but I like it so far. The artwork is for my AP Studio Art concentration; the story is just something I came up with.
